All about the General Assembly in the US State of Maryland Maryland is located in the region of Mid-Atlantic and is basically recognized as one of the smallest state of the country of the United States of America, and it is basically bordered by the different states of the said country, such as the state of Delaware to its east, the state of Pennsylvania to its north, and the state of West Virginia, Washington D.C. and Virginia to its south and west. The state’s capital city is the Annapolis, but the largest city is the Baltimore. The state of Maryland is basically called in various nicknames, like the Old Line State, the Free State, and the Chesapeake Bay State, for the basic reason that this specific state is categorized as the birthplace of religious freedom of United States of America. The government system of the state of Maryland is basically similar with the government systems of the other states in the country of the United States of America, and such government is typically administered and conducted according to the constitution of the said country. The general assembly of the state of Maryland is commonly held and convened in the state house which is found in the state’s capital city, and general assembly of the states are typically composed of legislative body and state legislature. The Maryland general assembly is basically composed of two houses, namely the lower chamber, which is also referred to as the house of delegates, along with its representatives; and the upper chamber, which is also referred to as the house of the senate, together with their representatives, and because of that the Maryland general assembly is also recognized as a bicameral body. The functions of these two houses include judging the qualifications of their members, punishing or expelling their members, and establishing rules for the conduct of its business. The people who wants to become part of the Maryland general assembly as a delegate or senator, they need to fit the various qualifications, such as being a resident for at least a year prior to the election, they should be a citizen of the state of Maryland, and the qualified age for a delegate is at least twenty-one years old, while for a senator is at least twenty-five years old. Each of the elected officials will basically work in a four-year term, but in instances wherein the position will be unoccupied due to a member’s resignation, death or disqualification, the one who has the power to assign a new member to occupy the said position is called as the governor. The one who led the upper chamber or the house of the senate is called as the president, while in the house of the delegate or the lower chamber is called the speaker, and they have their own responsibilities, prerogatives and duties that allows them to influence the process of legislation in a significant method.
